Title: Dodo with a Feather Hat

Artist: Ernst Ludwig Kirchner

Created: Germany 1911

Display Location: Milwaukee Art Museum, Wisconsin, USA

Kirchner was a German expressionist painter in the early 20th century. He has quite a few famous paintings, but Dodo With a Feather Hat evokes a new emotion from its audience. The title of this painting stems from a nickname for the girl in the painting, Doris Grosze. Doris Grosze was a artists model living in Dresden when she first met Kirchner. Almost instantly she became one of his favorite models until eventually they became lovers. From 1903 to 1911 Doris and Kirchner did an extensive amount of work together leading Kirchner to nickname Doris as Dodo.

Aurora showcases the never-ending, always-changing power of art and its ability to influence generations across time. The portraits in Aurora, by local photographers Ike and Tash, feature 19 young people from all over the South Sound. These portraits highlight youth as the subjects of remixed and reimagined versions of well-known works of art. The show empowers youth to see themselves in new ways and inspires young people to connect with works of art from other times and places.
