Title: Buy a Posy

Artist: John George Brown

Created: United States of America 1881

Location: North Carolina Museum of Art, North Carolina, USA

John George Brown was a British citizen and American painter. He was born in Durham, England in November of 1831. He studied at the School of Design in Newcastle while working as a glass cutter. He then moved to New York City in 1853 and studied Thomas Seir Cummings at the National Academy of Design. Brown was soon elected at National Academician in 1861, and by 1899 he was the Academy’s vice-president. Many of his paintings were defined as a British genre adapted to American subjects. Many would say his paintings had precise detail but were poor in color. He was an inspiration to many people including his parents.

Aurora showcases the never-ending, always-changing power of art and its ability to influence generations across time. The portraits in Aurora, by local photographers Ike and Tash, feature 19 young people from all over the South Sound. These portraits highlight youth as the subjects of remixed and reimagined versions of well-known works of art. The show empowers youth to see themselves in new ways and inspires young people to connect with works of art from other times and places.

Awakening. Genesis. Creation.
